downloadTechPro is happy to present an exclusive, new 22-page chapter excerpt from a frequent contributor to Aberdeen Essentials, Dr. Terry Critchley

Critchley’s new book is entitled High-Performance IT Services, and is available for pre-order right now, with a formal release date of July 26 through Auerbach Publications.

For those unfamiliar with his previous work, he has also authored High Availability IT Services. Critchley is a retired IT consultant living near Manchester, UK. Terry gained an Honors degree in Physics at Manchester University, and followed five years later with a PhD in Nuclear Physics. He then joined IBM as a Systems Engineer and spent 24 years there in a variety of accounts and specializations, followed by Oracle for three years. Terry also spent around five years with Sun Microsystems, between 1996 and 2001, after planning and running the Sun European Y2000 education.

Per the official description for the book:

This book on performance fundamentals covers UNIX, OpenVMS, Linux, Windows, and MVS. Most of the theory and systems design principles can be applied to other operating systems, as can some of the benchmarks. The book equips professionals with the ability to assess performance characteristics in unfamiliar environments.

It is suitable for practitioners, especially those whose responsibilities include performance management, tuning, and capacity planning. IT managers with a technical outlook also benefit from the book as well as consultants and students in the world of systems for the first time in a professional capacity.

The chapter excerpt here is from the first part of the book, and explores the often misunderstood, often neglected topic of computer performance—what it is, what is good and bad performance, and what factors affect the performance of a computer system or systems.
